This 'precious' room has been cause of my posting absence for so many weeks. Being a shelving unit away from completion, perhaps a strip or two of baseboard (oh and a door), the road to a tolerable room can now be divulged.
It began with the floor to ceiling press board 'cabinets'. Both of us agreed that the sagging and moisture blistered abominations had to go and so, with the idea of replacing them, and them only, and painting the room in order to spruce things up, I ripped them out one afternoon. BUT - as with many things in this delicious 127 year old house it didn't turn out to be as simple as all that. Upon their removal, the corner floor to ceiling bits revealed the supreme corner-cutting of whomever had laid the cheap floor. Instead of taking the cabinets out and laying the new floor underneath, this floor had been cut around the cabinet.... the old, old, old floor underneath was noticeably and horridly moisture damaged, rotted and depressing.
It was this rectangle of rot that resulted in the reassessment of all and culminated in two months of renovation.
